A workspace can look spotless and still be a transmission surface. Here's what high-touch disinfection actually involves — and why dwell time is the part everyone skips.
There's a meaningful difference between a workspace that looks clean and one that is clean. Wiping a desk with a dry cloth removes dust and leaves a surface that photographs well. It does very little about what's actually living on the door handle everyone touched on the way in.
High-touch surfaces are the ones that matter, and the list is shorter than people expect: door handles and push bars, light switches, stair and corridor rails, elevator buttons, shared keyboards and phones, break room appliance handles, restroom fixtures and dispensers, and reception counters. In a clinic, add exam room surfaces, chair arms, and anything within a patient's reach.
The single most-skipped step in commercial cleaning is dwell time. Every disinfectant has a contact time on its label — the number of minutes the surface must stay visibly wet for the product to do what it claims. Depending on the product, that's typically somewhere between thirty seconds and ten minutes. Spraying a surface and immediately wiping it dry does not disinfect it. It cleans it, which is a different outcome.
The second most-skipped step is preventing cross-contamination. Using the same cloth from a restroom to a break room counter moves contamination rather than removing it. We use colour-coded microfiber, with a dedicated colour per zone, so a cloth physically cannot travel from one area to another. In clinical settings this isn't a nice-to-have — it's the whole point.
Order matters too. We work clean areas before dirty ones and high surfaces before low ones, so nothing that's already been finished gets recontaminated by work that happens afterwards. It sounds obvious; it's routinely done backwards.
For offices, clinics, schools, and banks across McHenry County, we write these routines into the service scope so they don't depend on who's on shift that night. A documented routine is the only reliable way to get the same result every visit.
